Tomorrow’s economy is a Blue Economy
Already, the demand for seafood is growing faster than any other kind of food. This is especially true for salmon. In Canada, farm-raised salmon accounts for 97% of all salmon produced here, over 90% of all farmed finfish and over 80% of the value of all farmed seafood.
What’s more, salmon farming provides thousands of jobs in Canada’s rural, coastal and Indigenous communities. These are good, year-round, irreplaceable jobs. These direct jobs also create thousands of indirect jobs with salmon processors, marketers, and suppliers of equipment, feed, and services.
Even better, the potential for those jobs to grow is huge: not only does Canada have more coastline than any other nation on earth, it borders on three oceans. So we have an opportunity no other country enjoys: to lead the farming of salmon on the world stage.
Rest assured, if we don’t, other countries will, as Norway, Chile and Scotland do today.
